SHORT TERM PROGRAMLONG TERM PROGRAM

Selection of Homestay and the Criteria

1. Recruitment of Homestay via schools and churches.
2. Gateway Academy and a school coordinator obtain basic information regarding Homestay.
3. Participants will be provided the Homestay information before departure.
4. An orientation is conducted by a local school for the locally selected Homestay families.
5. Students and their parents receive a prior training about important rules before departure.

Environment of Homestay Family

Host families are generally middle-to-upper class families and they play parental roles. Since the host families are selected based on their willingness to dedicate themselves with Christian values and to have a cultural experience and not profit oriented, students are enthusiastically welcomed. In addition to the language and cultural experiences through Gateway Academy‘s training program, students will have valuable experiences with their host families as well.

Selection of Homestay and the Criteria

Lodging system of an overseas English camp can be classified into two categories. Both “dormitory” and “Homestay with a local family” have their own strengths and weaknesses, but the best way to acquire English skills is “being fully exposed to an English-speaking environment” and to experience “their thought and cultures.” Students will grasp the natives’ way of thinking (culture) by being exposed to the culture of their own host families and interacting with their teachers and peers at school and their buddies (peer guide).

The cultural shock that students face during this process can be mitigated through the “prior training of parents and students.” Students may interpret the cultural differences with negative emotions, but if they are trained to “accept and understand” that they are just “different,” it will take much shorter time for them to adapt to the new culture. Through such orientation, students will also become fluent in English in a shorter period of time because of their familiarity with the culture.

"The English Immersion program allowed me to explore the coasts of Southern California and experience the culture and heart of Los Angeles all while maintaining a top position academically in the competitive schools nearby. Without Gateway, none of this would have been possible!"
